Childcare days rarely go exactly as planned. A child spills milk. The playground is too hot. A transition falls apart, or a jacket goes missing. In these hectic moments, you are forced to make quick decisions. When the pressure is on, the best question you can ask is:
"What does this child need right now?" That single question is your North Star. It helps you prioritize:
Their Body: Are they safe, fed, rested, and comfortable?
Their Heart: Do they feel seen, respected, and included?
Their Mind: Are we helping them learn, problem-solve, and build confidence?
Their Belongings: Are we helping them respect and track their jackets, bottles, and comfort items?
Putting children first doesn’t mean the schedule disappears; it means the schedule serves the children, not the other way around.
Plans will change. That is the nature of our work. A great teacher adjusts without losing sight of what matters most. When the day twists and turns, come back to the child—before the schedule, before convenience, and before "we’ve always done it this way."
The child always comes first.
